Why We Do Not Use Amalgam Or Contaminate Metals
Dr. Oppenlander believes in using only superior products and techniques in providing you with the most functional, conservative, and esthetically pleasing restorations and smiles. Because of this, he has not used amalgam (“silver fillings”) for the past 10 years. Although amalgam is still used by many dentists, this material is in direct conflict with Dr. Oppenlander’s philosophical base and therefore not used in our office because of the following:
- Typical amalgam is comprised of silver, mercury, and copper. Some have lead, zinc and tin
- These metals are conductive materials for hot, cold, electrical, etc.
- Placing amalgam typically requires drilling sound tooth structure to establish retention
- Drilling and packing for amalgam creates stress fractures
- Amalgam irreversibly stains the tooth and tissue
- There is a higher risk of an allergic (acute or chronic) reaction with any of the metallic components of amalgam
- Amalgam is cosmetically unacceptable
- Disposing of any amalgam is harmful to the environment
